Enhancing Rock Drilling Efficiency at Jieyang Thermal Power Plant
——Improved wear resistance and penetration performance through redesigned high-helix roller cone barrel bits in complex granite formations.

Project Overview
Location: Qianzhan Town, Huilai County, Jieyang, Guangdong
Contractor: Zhongji Jiankan Group Co., Ltd.
Project: Foundation piling for a 2×1000MW thermal power plant
Timeline: 8 months (Started Feb 2025)
Drill Rigs: SANY SR285R/235/360, Sunward SWDM420/42H-II, XCMG XR360
Main Geological Condition: Dense granite with UCS up to 129 MPa
Main Challenges Faced During Drilling
Severe bit wear due to frequent contact with granite and boulders
Low penetration rate (0.2–0.3 m/h) even in weathered granite
High variability in strata, making standard parameters ineffective
Improper bit replacement – mixed old and new cones on the same head
Poor slurry circulation – leading to heat buildup and inefficient debris removal
Inconsistent operator skills – variable drilling pressure and RPM

Our Engineering Solutions
- Rapid wear in hard rock – high spiral core barrel design, optimized cutter layout
- Poor slag removal – improved flow path + enhanced mud management
- Inconsistent operator operation – on-site training + distribution of operation manuals
- Poor tracking and maintenance – one machine one drill bit policy with usage log
- Inefficient coring – suggested updating of triangular core holding system
